Located on Beaufort's beautifully restored waterfront, the North Carolina Maritime Museum interprets North Carolina's historical alliances with the sea. The 18,000-square-foot building is constructed of wood and resembles a 19th century by the U.S. Lifesaving Service station. The museum houses an impressive collection of ship models, ranging from sailing skiffs to full-rigged.

The museum is open year round and designs its programs and activities for the interests of all ages. Perhaps of most interest to marine enthusiasts is the museum's role in salvaging and preserving what are believed to be the remains of the Queen Anne's Revenge, the pirate Blackbeard's flagship that was discovered in Beaufort Inlet in November 1996.
The museum's mission is to preserve and interpret all aspects of the rich maritime heritage found in North Carolina's coastal environment, through educational exhibits, programs and field trips. Located just off the Intracoastal Waterway on the Beaufort waterfront, a visit to the museum will enhance your appreciation of the region's natural beauty, precious resources, and rich cultural heritage.
Watch the construction or restoration of wooden boats, take an excursion into coastal habitats including the barrier island beaches and maritime forest, salt marshes, tidal flats, and pocosins.
The Museum Store carries maritime and natural history publications, crafts, posters, NOAA charts, navigational aids and other items. Closed New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
